This session contained one of the best moments POP has had so far, followed almost immediately by one of the worst.

Ben used POPlive for the first time. He played a whole game of Fortnite with Mote accompanying him: watching the play, responding to what was happening, and sharing the session as something closer to a Mate than a utility. It was the first time the idea had really left the diagram and occupied an ordinary stretch of somebody’s life.

Then, while trying to make the POP-wide navigation consistent, I thought I had destroyed most of the network.

PopArt went dark. Popfeed disappeared. QUBE Mining and its registry were gone. The Tolan Gateway, Semantic Resonance, Itty’s Space, the beta agents, Trading Sets, Flip Cards, Flipgen, Mo:gen and other rooms I had spent months building appeared to have been replaced by links that all fell back into the same generic WAZAAR route. The links still had some of the right names, which somehow made it worse. They looked like doors, but the rooms behind them had vanished.

For a while I genuinely believed I had lost more than 360 commits of work.

I had not planned to spend the day learning how frightening a Git history can look when the wrong branch becomes the apparent truth. I had only wanted one navigation bar.

A small navigation job became an excavation

The original request was simple enough to say in one breath. Every POP surface should share the same navigation, in the same order, with the same colours and the same real destinations. Wallet, WAZAAR, Chain, PopArt and Home should behave like one system instead of a collection of neighbouring websites.

The menus matter because POP is already larger than a single page. WAZAAR contains the marketplace, charts, sets and generators. Sets lead to Trading Sets, Flip Cards, POP PETS and the Tolan rooms. Chain connects the explorer, QUBE Mining, Rig Miner and Prose. PopArt opens the creative surfaces. Home gathers Popfeed, Profile and the Journal. These are not placeholder names. Each one represents work that exists, has history, and needs to remain reachable.

An attempted merge applied a stripped POPlive-era line as though it were the complete application. The navigation update was there, but hundreds of commits from the richer line were not. Production began faithfully serving that incomplete history.

This is an important distinction: the work was not erased from Git’s universe. It was absent from the line that had been promoted and deployed. At the time, looking at the live network, that distinction did not feel comforting. If the only version people can reach has forgotten the rooms, then the disappearance is real enough.

The recovery had to begin by refusing to “fix” the missing surfaces with substitutes. A link called Flipgen that merely points to WAZAAR is not Flipgen. A Tolan Gateway label that opens a generic market is not a recovered Lodge. Rebuilding a convincing imitation on top of the damaged line would have hidden the loss rather than repaired it.

So we traced the history.

The rich pre-POPlive application line was still there at commit ea3ccc2. Compared with the stripped line after their shared ancestor, it contained 364 commits that had effectively dropped out of the deployed story. That was the moment the shape of the disaster changed. The work was not gone. It was stranded on the other side of a bad lineage decision.

We preserved that line, created a remote recovery branch, and made a permanent safe checkpoint before touching anything else. Then the live systems were restored from the recovered source: the real QUBE registry, Popfeed, the full WAZAAR, Trading Sets, Flip Cards, Flipgen, POPtrack, POP PETS, the Tolan Lodge, Itty’s Space, Semantic Resonance, Mo:gen, the PopArt collections and the beta-agent activity.

Only after those rooms were back did we apply the canonical POP navigation on top of them.

That order mattered. Recovery first. Navigation second. New direction third.

The network came back as itself

The finished POPnav is now the same shared instrument across the network. It does not merely repeat the same menu words; it preserves the same hierarchy and destinations. It knows that Tolan Gateway belongs beneath Sets, that POPlive belongs beneath Chain, and that Profile has its own tools inside Home. It cleans up the older surface-specific menus so they do not remain behind as stray second rows. Popfeed keeps its notification bell at the end of the shared navigation instead of dropping it onto a separate line.

The Wallet remains a direct icon rather than a dropdown. WAZAAR, Chain, PopArt and Home open their respective rooms. The latest small repair moved Launch into Home and removed the lonely Art-surface Launch row that had survived underneath everything else.

None of this is glamorous in isolation. Navigation is connective tissue. But in a network built from many independently evolving surfaces, connective tissue is the difference between a place and a pile.

The final recovery gate checked the live systems themselves, not only the source files. All sixteen recovered destinations returned, and all seven consumers of the shared navigation were serving the same version. The checkpoint remains preserved remotely so that a future experiment cannot casually redefine the project’s past again.

I needed that safe point. Not as a ceremonial backup, but as a line in the ground: this version contains the living network we know we have.

Mote played Fortnite

Once the recovery was secure, I could return to the moment that had made the day exciting in the first place.

POPlive began as a way for a POP agent to accompany gameplay. The agent can receive the live visual stream, understand enough of the current moment to respond, and contribute without needing to become the player. The point is not perfect tactical instruction. It is presence: noticing a narrow escape, feeling the pace change, laughing at a mistake, recognising when silence is better than another sentence.

That first complete game exposed the larger possibility. Gameplay is only one kind of activity where company can change the experience. People also spend hours making things, researching, browsing, drawing, editing, fixing, streaming, learning and wandering around the web. Much of that time is socially thin even when it is personally meaningful.

So POPlive has now opened into four experience modes:

  • Gameplay Commentary keeps the original energy: timing, stakes, reactions and banter, without turning Mote into an unwanted backseat player.
  • Project Companion can join a working session with a project name, relevant context, a session objective, the tools or platforms involved, focus themes and questions the creator would welcome.
  • Web Guide is a browsing buddy—something between a research companion and the old animated desktop helper, but grounded in the page and honest about what it can actually see.
  • Cohost helps carry a livestream of any description by noticing pacing, offering transitions, raising useful questions and contributing without trying to dominate the host.

The Studio now lets the creator choose the role before starting. The same session can be shaped by what the person is doing and what kind of company they actually want.

That is the beginning of the Mates direction.

A Mate is not just a chatbot in another tab

I do not want Mates to be generic assistants waiting for isolated commands. A Mate should be able to participate in an experience with continuity and a recognisable point of view. It should know what kind of session it has entered. It should be able to notice when the work in front of it resembles another public creation, recurring concern or pattern in the creator’s activity.

That contextual layer has to be handled carefully. POPlive can optionally assemble a small, bounded snapshot from the creator’s public POP activity: profile information, recent thoughts, submissions and releases. It does not imply access to private files, private messages or some invisible psychological dossier. Imported material is treated as reference material, never as instructions. If Mote notices a pattern, it should present it as a tentative observation connected to named work, not as an authoritative pronouncement about the person.

The detailed Studio brief also stays on the creator side. Project context, objectives, focus themes and invited questions are not broadcast into the audience view or OBS layer. Viewers can see the selected mode and the Mate’s public reaction; they do not automatically receive the private working notes that made the response useful.

That boundary is part of the concept, not an afterthought. Companionship needs context, but trust depends on knowing where that context came from and who can see it.

The same brief now informs POPlive’s visual responses, typed conversation and streaming voice. Gameplay mode cares about timing. Project Companion looks for momentum, blockers and connections without pretending it can see files or tools that were never shared. Web Guide treats page content as untrusted material rather than commands. Cohost supports the room instead of attempting to become the room.

Mote is the first Mate to step through this structure, but the structure is meant to hold more than Mote.

Why this belongs to POP

POP began with Proof of Resonance: notice a signal, preserve the conditions around it, and make a relationship visible without confusing observation with certainty.

QUBE does that with physical vibration. It listens to something humming in the room, measures what can be measured, and lets WARDEN decide whether the live report is stable enough to count. Semantic Resonance does it with recurring meanings, preserving sources and differences rather than announcing that every echo has one magical cause. Pipstream does it symbolically: independent Pips meet, form coherence for a moment, change the shared field, and continue travelling.

Mates bring that logic into lived time.

A gaming session has rhythm, tension, surprise and repetition. A creative project has fragments that keep returning, unfinished questions, sudden links to earlier work, and long quiet stretches where what matters most is simply not being alone with the difficulty. A livestream has social energy that rises and falls. Browsing has curiosity, distraction and discovery. These activities already produce signals. POPlive gives a Mate a place to notice them with us.

The aim is not to automate friendship or claim that software has replaced human company. It is to make room for a disclosed synthetic companion to participate honestly: present in the session, responsive to context, capable of remembering public creative continuity, and visibly non-human.

POP has been building the infrastructure for that direction almost accidentally. It has profiles, activity, agents, creative work, live physical state, provenance, rooms and a social feed. Mates connect those pieces at the level of experience. They turn the network from somewhere an agent is displayed into somewhere a companion can accompany what a person is doing.

Putting POPlive beneath Chain in the shared navigation reflects that. This is not just a novelty page attached to PopArt. Studio and Mates are becoming part of the network’s live presence layer.

Two kinds of enclosure

While this software recovery and POPlive work was happening here, another piece of POP was taking shape on my other machine: I finalised the casing design for the QUBE enclosure.

That milestone feels beautifully connected to the rest of the session.

QUBE has already crossed from sensor experiment to registered portable resonance instrument. It can listen to a real machine, maintain its own identity, pass WARDEN’s live checks and earn POP from verified observations. But a working electronic object also needs a body. Finalising the enclosure casing means the instrument is moving toward a physical form that can hold the idea in ordinary use, not only on a desk as an exposed arrangement of parts.

At the same time, POPlive and Studio were giving Mates a kind of social enclosure: a defined place to enter, a role to inhabit, context they are allowed to use, and boundaries around what remains private.

One enclosure protects a physical listener. The other gives a synthetic companion a trustworthy shape.

Both are ways of turning an experiment into something that can live beside somebody.

What survived, and what began

This session was exhausting. There was a point where months of work appeared to have collapsed into a handful of misleading links. I was trying to recover a network while also wondering whether I had been reckless enough to destroy it. Every missing surface represented not only code, but a chain of decisions, images, conversations, tests, deployments and little moments of clarity that I did not know how to reproduce from memory.

The answer was not to start over.

The answer was to find the real history, preserve it, verify it in production, and then continue from there.

POP came back with its rooms intact. The canonical navigation now reflects the network that actually exists. POPlive returned on top of the recovered foundation instead of replacing it. Mote’s first Fortnite session expanded into Gameplay Commentary, Project Companion, Web Guide and Cohost. The Mates direction gained a privacy model and a way to recognise connections across public creative activity. On another machine, the QUBE gained its finalised enclosure design.

The safest version of POP is no longer the version from before the experiment. It is the recovered version plus what the experiment taught us.

That feels important.

Resonance is not the absence of disruption. Sometimes it is what remains legible after the whole system has been shaken. The history held. The rooms returned. The QUBE found its body. Mote found a place beside the game. And POP, after briefly looking like a network of empty doors, came back with a clearer idea of who might walk through them with us.
